No fees unless we win.

A "contingency fee."

What exactly does that mean?

Hey, I'm Loyd Bourgeois, South Louisiana personal injury attorney with offices here in Luling and Metairie, Louisiana.

And we get this question quite often when we're talking to prospective clients and callers. "I saw that you have a contingency fee" or, "I saw, in some other marketing, no fee unless you win."

"What exactly does that mean?"

So it means just what it says. It means you will not have to pay a fee to an attorney, like us, unless we recover some money for you, i.e., win. If we can win anything for you, then we get a percentage of that recovery. If it's a dollar, it's a percentage of that dollar. It's a million dollars, it's a percentage of that million dollars.

If we get zero, there is no fee.

Now, this is a little different than costs. So costs are separate from fees in the legal world. Costs are things that are paid out of pocket by the firm, and so that would be like we have to get a police report, we have to get medical records, and we pay those costs out of pocket. Some firms may charge costs on top of fees and they may charge you costs even if they don't win.

Here at our firm, we charge no cost or no fees unless we're successful in winning your case.

And that's what it means when we say no fee unless we win or that there's a contingency fee on your case. That fee is contingent upon us winning for you.
