Homestead Exemptions Increase for Disabled Veterans – Election Results

In yesterday’s election, a proposal to increase the homestead exemption for disabled veterans appeared on ballots in 42 parishes and passed with overwhelming support in each.

Louisiana homeowners are exempt from paying property taxes on the first $75,000 of the assessed value of an owner-occupied home. In yesterday’s election, voters approved to double the exemption to the first $150,000 of a qualifying veteran’s home. The proposition only applies to veterans who have been rated 100 percent disabled by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. The disability has to be service connected, but not necessarily incurred as a result of combat.

Louisiana voters approved the constitutional amendment in November 2010, and it then had to be approved by each individual parish.

The parishes which approved the measure yesterday are:
1. Acadia Parish
2. Ascension Parish
3. Assumption Parish
4. Avoyelles Parish
5. Bienville Parish
6. Bossier Parish
7. Caddo Parish

    Dear Mr. Bourgeois,
I was trying to see if there was an amendment in place to allow for Disabled Veterans who are 70% disabled with 30% unemployability apply for Homestead Exemption and receive the same exemption from paying property taxes as the ones who are 100%. I can’t believe that we who are 70% were excluded from this exemption…
My property taxes right now are $1500/yr.when they could be $600/yr if we were included in the bill that was passed…
I can’t work due to multiple health problems. I have Ischaemic Heart Disease, sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol etc..and was exposed to agent orange in Vietnam….
If your not able to assist me, would you be able to tell me what Senator or Represenative could I contact to assist me in my plight?
    Thanks so much,
    Sincerely,
    Thomas Douzat
